Anxiety and Acupuncture

Anxiety is a normal human reaction to stressful situations such as starting a new job, public speaking but when these immediate stresses disappear and the anxiety persists then it becomes a problem. Anxiety can be described as persistent fear and worry over everyday situations. These feelings can escalate and cause panic attacks where the sufferer will experience terror and physical symptoms such as a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, shaking and nausea.

The exact cause of anxiety is not known but what is known is that certain traumatic events such as a death, relationship breakdown, chronic stress can be an underlying cause. It is also thought that there maybe a genetic factor, so if one of your parents suffered from anxiety it may make some people more susceptible. Certain personality types such as perfectionists are also more at risk of suffering too. Physical problems such as thyroid, heart disease can also cause anxiety symptoms.

Journaling your thoughts can be a helpful way to recognise how you are feeling and help to understand yourself better. This can help reduce the symptoms and improve overall well-being.

The use of acupuncture to help with anxiety is well researched and ear acupuncture in particular is used to treat members of the armed forces suffering from PTSD. It is thought to reduce the stress levels, balance the hormones, and regulate the nervous system helping the body to switch off the sympathetic fight or flight mode and initiate the parasympathetic resting and relaxation mode.
